ETIAS permit and entry into the European Union
The European Union is considering imposing an ETIAS permit on citizens of countries that enter it without a visa starting in 2025.
In 2018, the European Union decided to adopt the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) to create an additional layer of security and prevent any crimes or problems that European countries may face.
It is assumed that the ETIAS permit will be implemented soon. As after its implementation, citizens will not be affected by this procedure, because the ETIAS permit is a permit that can be obtained within minutes through several clicks on the laptop or phone.
It is worth noting that the ETIAS permit does not apply to countries that have a weak passport only, or applies to some and not to others. Rather, it applies to all countries entering Europe without a visa, including British and American citizens.
What is the ETIAS permit?
The European Union decided to establish the European Travel Information and Authorization System, or what is known as ETIAS, to reduce the risks of terrorism and crimes that have increased recently, in addition to reducing biological threats posed by epidemics and combating forms of illegal immigration.
ETIAS systems also help reduce security gaps created by visa-exempt travelers by subjecting them to additional security checks, assisting with border management and improving European income.
You may be surprised to know that the ETIAS permit also benefits countries that enter the EU without a visa. The reason for this is that it reduces the waiting times and long procedures that travelers face when entering the EU without a visa.
There are only 59 countries that can enter the EU without a visa, including Caribbean countries, and it is not yet known whether ETIAS also requires medical insurance.
The ETIAS permit is valid for 3 years from the date of application or until your passport expires. After obtaining it, you will be eligible to travel to all European countries and reside for 90 days every 180 days for a full 3 years. You are allowed to re-obtain and apply for a new ETIAS permit 120 days before your effective permit expires.
Britain, Belarus, Cyprus, Ukraine, Serbia, Russia, Ireland, Moldova, Albania, Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro are located within Europe, but individuals can travel there without an ETIAS permit.
ETIAS permit approval is usually quick, taking 15 minutes, but may require some individuals to provide additional files or information, and applications are rarely rejected.
Because the system is not yet operational, it is not known how it will be implemented in practice, and it is subject to change or modification for the application process or the system itself.

Schengen visa and ETIAS permit difference
◈ The ETIAS system is a permit only, while the Schengen visa is a system for obtaining an entry visa.

Steps to obtain an ETIAS permit
Before submitting data, you must ensure that you have an active passport and a valid email. The ETIAS permit requires that you have a passport valid for at least 3 months. However, some countries require the passport to be valid for 6 months. After confirming the above, the following can be done:
◈ Enter the official website of the ETIAS system.
◈ Fill out the necessary data required, such as personal information, passport, contact details, work and study information, if any.
◈ Fill in the information related to your travel plan.
◈ Answer security questions.
◈ Attach some documents, such as a passport.
◈ After filling in the necessary data, you must pay to the ETIAS website by credit or debit card in the amount of 7 euros. People under 18 and over 65 do not pay this amount.
◈ The approval process takes 15 minutes, sometimes longer. Therefore, it is advised not to book a flight or make travel arrangements until after obtaining an ETIAS permit.
◈ After submitting your application and paying, you will receive an email containing your ETIAS permit, print it out to show to border inspection officials.
◈ When writing the application, you must state the first country you intend to visit, and after arriving at your first destination, you may travel to any country that accepts an ETIAS permit.
Requirements needed for ETIAS permit
The ETIAS permit will check your details to see if you have any criminal or negative immigration history and will often ask you to provide the following data:
◈ General data such as name, birth and age.
◈ Information about the passport document you provide.
◈ Previous history of entry into Schengen such as rejection and previous visits.
◈ Some questions related to criminal record verification.
Who is/is not affected by the ETIAS permit?
◈ Citizens of Schengen Area member states are not affected.
◈ This will not affect EU countries that are not within the Schengen countries.
◈ ETIAS permit will not affect countries outside the European Union that require a travel visa to enter the European Union.
◈ ETIAS permit affects countries outside the European Union that do not require a visa to enter the European Union.
Reasons for rejecting an ETIAS permit
The ETIAS rejection rates are very low, estimated at 1 percent, and the reasons may be as follows:
◈ Submitting the application with a lost or stolen passport.
◈ If you are considered a risk of illegal immigration.
◈ If your application to enter the country has been previously rejected.
◈ If the entered information is incorrect, or if there are mistake in submitting the application.
◈ If you notice a mistake while submitting an application, it is best to resubmit a new, corrected application. You will have the right to request that the information be corrected, but approval may take some time.
◈ If the application denied, you can appeal and your application will be reconsidered. It is preferable to resubmit a new application for an ETIAS permit rather than appeal if the rejection was due to a mistake.
