Two Caribbean islands have been included in the BBC’s prestigious list of the top 10 sustainable countries it recommends for travel in 2024.
Sustainable tourism is a term in tourism that takes into account current and future economic, social and environmental impacts and meets the requirements of visitors and the environment at the same time.
What does it mean? This means that any decision you make about your trip through the Caribbean islands, from supporting a hotel that uses solar energy and a water recycling system to applying sunscreen to the coral you pack, has a major impact.
Saba, a Caribbean Island, ranked third on the BBC list and was described by the BBC as the emerging champion of the Caribbean.
The website stated that some of the reasons for the selection were initiatives to build a solar park, a recycling system, a marine park, a water bottling plant, and a ban on single-use plastics.
It is worth noting that this country is considered a point of hope for the health of the oceans, as it hosts a marine laboratory that is the first of its kind in Windward and participates in several projects, most notably the study of scorpions and the study of orchid growth, as confirmed by the British Broadcasting Corporation.
The BBC also included the eco-friendly Caribbean Island of Dominica in its list of the top 10 countries for sustainable travel in 2024, and the beautiful Caribbean Island that offers Dominica citizenship by investment ranked 10th on the list.
This follows Dominica’s long-standing commitment to preserving the environment and fortifying its island against the forces of nature by building innovative hospitals, roads, bridges and airports.
The Dominican Dominica received this honor from the most prestigious British bodies after its tireless efforts in building the nation in a sustainable manner, thanks to the Prime Minister of Dominica, Dr. Roosevelt Skerrit, who is trying to transform Dominica into the first country to adapt to climate change.
Why Dominica among the rest of the Caribbean islands?

Dominica is characterized by dense rainforests, picturesque rivers, the presence of the second largest boiling lake in the world, the longest hiking trail in the Caribbean islands, and a group of resorts that have clearly emerged globally and not only on the level of the Caribbean islands.
These resorts have gained a prominent position on the global level, with Travel magazine praising Secret Bay as one of the best beautiful and sustainable resorts, in addition to the Col berry Ridge Hotel, according to Fodor, obtaining a place among the 60 best hotels in the world.
Also, Dominica is trying to reduce its carbon footprint by building a geothermal power plant in the Warsaw Valley, which is scheduled to generate 10 megawatts when completed.
Dominica is also trying to build the world’s largest marine protected area for animals threatened by climate change, including the sperm whale, which is supposed to be 300 square miles. And thanks to Dominica’s biodiversity, there are more than 200 species of birds and rare creatures on its territory.
Just as Dominica has tried to create early warning systems and innovative settlements for its people, on the other hand it has developed a new kayak route to promote the island, the BBC added.
Called the Waitukupuli Trail, this route runs 60 kilometers along the picturesque west coast, past secluded beaches and stunning scenery.
